Commercial Driver’s License
- 1/30When holding a Category B license
In Denmark, a valid Category B licence is a prerequisite before beginning training for C1, C, D1, or D vehicle categories.
If applying for a Category C1 license
C1 allows driving trucks between 3,500 and 7,500 kg. Applicants must meet vision and medical standards.
When applying for full Category C
Category C covers heavy trucks above 7,500 kg and requires more extensive theory and practice than C1.
To obtain a D1 minibus license
D1 licences allow transport of up to 16 passengers. Denmark requires age, health clearance, and classroom/practical tests.
If you hold a C1 license
Holders of a C1 can upgrade by completing the C and shared modules. No need to retake basic traffic training.
At 18 years old
Entry-level training is available for C1/D1, but full use may be restricted to non-commercial activities or short routes.
When applying for a Category D (bus) license
D licences allow driving large passenger buses. Limited D usage is possible at 21 for under-50 km routes.
When planning to drive CE category
CE allows towing with heavy trucks and cannot be issued unless the driver already holds a valid Category C licence.
When you start trailer training
For CE, DE, and C1E, trailer-specific manoeuvring, reversing, and safety training are mandatory in Denmark.
To receive a C1E license
The C1E licence permits light trucks with trailers over 750 kg and requires passing additional theoretical and practical tests.
When aiming for D1E bus-trailer license
D1E licences permit towing with minibuses and require a full D1 licence plus trailer handling certification.
At 21 years old
Minimum age to drive Category C, D1, or CE vehicles is 21, except under special Code 95 exemptions.
When you pass the CE or DE trailer modules
Successful CE/DE exam completion allows legal operation of trucks or buses with heavy trailers in Denmark.
When upgrading from C1 to C
Upgrading from light to full truck licence requires completion of new modules but avoids repeating general driver education.
When you begin the training journey
All applicants for commercial vehicle licences begin with road law, hazard recognition, and vehicle-specific courses.
When renewing or requalifying
Renewal of commercial licences (especially after 65) requires health checks and sometimes Code 95 refresher training.
At each module stage
Each step of Danish commercial training includes evaluation drives and assessments to ensure readiness for the next stage.
If not qualified for mandatory training
Without medical fitness or proper age, training institutions may deny entry into licence programs.
When not meeting training objectives
If performance or understanding is inadequate, the school may require you to redo modules before progression.
If driving a heavy vehicle with improper license
Driving C, CE, D, or DE vehicles without holding the correct category is a serious traffic violation in Denmark.
When skipping required guidance modules
Step-by-step progression is enforced in Denmark. Missing required lessons blocks access to exams or next-level courses.
When training for professional license
Code 95 is mandatory for all Category C or D licence holders who intend to operate commercially across the EU.
After completing all training steps
Final testing involves both practical road driving and safety knowledge under official supervision.
If seeking a D1E or C1E trailer license
Denmark requires specific test elements for trailer operations, including reversing, brake checks, and safety procedures.
When combining categories
Joint training for C and D allows efficiency by reusing overlapping theory and hazard modules.
When training across multiple categories
You don’t need to repeat common modules when training for both truck and bus if completed within a valid period.
If Code 95 is required
Initial professional competence requires a minimum of 140 (or 280 for new drivers) hours of training and exam.
When preparing for practical test
No learner may attempt the final test unless all prior modules, driving sessions, and evaluations are officially recorded.
When receiving a Category DE licence
DE licence is granted only after full D licence and trailer modules are passed. It permits articulated or towed bus operation.
If working as a driving instructor for heavy vehicles
Code 550 authorizes you to instruct others in C, CE, D, DE vehicles and must be listed on your licence.
